Balance Safe Search is the biggest change to how Balance Phone protects you in a while, and one of the few that gives you more rather than less. Here is what it is, in plain words.
Why safe search used to mean closed doors
For a long time, the only reliable way to keep search safe on a phone was to switch parts of it off. Image search, and parts of what the Google app can do, were closed, because there was no way to let them in without letting everything in. It worked, but it took away things that many people missed.
What Balance Safe Search is
Safe Search is a filter that lives on your phone. Instead of closing a feature, it quietly enforces the safe version of it, at the level of the network your phone uses. When it is on, you may see a small key icon in your status bar. That icon is the whole system, working in the background.
What it checks, and what it never sees
This is the part that matters most. Safe Search checks only the address of the sites you reach, never the content of what you send or receive. It does not read your messages, your searches or your pages. Nothing about your browsing leaves your phone beyond that address check. It is protection, not surveillance.
What opens because of it
Because Balance can now keep search safe without closing it, doors reopen. Google image search works again, with explicit results filtered out automatically. Pages that open inside other apps, a link in a chat, an article in your mail, are covered for the first time. And on a self-directed setup, a few apps do more of what they do: WhatsApp, Spotify and YouTube Music get some of their video and extras back, limits that were never meant for that setup.
What stays protected, always
Supervised and clinical profiles keep the complete protection set, exactly as before. And Safe Search is fail-safe by design: if it is ever unsure about a site, it protects first.
Your controls
Safe Search sets itself up on new devices during onboarding. On an existing device, Balance offers it exactly when it helps, and you can turn it on or off anytime in Settings. The same place holds the switches for blocking ads and trackers across your whole phone, on by default, yours to change if a page ever misbehaves.
A few common questions
Why did Android ask me to allow a VPN? Safe Search uses a local, on-device connection to do its filtering. Android shows a standard consent screen for that. It is not a remote VPN, and it does not route your browsing anywhere.
Can I run another VPN at the same time? Android allows one active VPN at a time, so Safe Search and a separate VPN app cannot both run together.
Will it drain my battery? No. It checks addresses only and is built to be light.
What is the key icon? It is Android's indicator that the on-device connection is active. For you, it simply means Safe Search is on.
