Tips to read more this summer

Every year, many people set themselves the challenge of investing more time in the world of books.

And now that the summer season is beginning to appear on the horizon, at Balance Phone we want to offer you tips to read more this summer.

A wonderful way to step away from screens, recharge your batteries, and relieve stress. Do you want to know them? Keep reading and we'll tell you!

What are the benefits of reading for our body?

Beyond all the cultural enrichment that spending time reading brings, this activity has many cognitive benefits. At a time when digital media absorbs us and going on vacation without social media is a real challenge, books can be great allies to lower our state of alertness.

Reading is one of those actions that force us to be one hundred percent focused on it. You can watch TV while browsing the internet or cook while listening to the radio, but this doesn't happen when we are immersed in a chapter of a novel.

When we dedicate time to a book, we open up a space for a pause. This implies a re-education of our nervous system, leaving aside the search for immediate dopamine and learning to be in the present moment.

It is the perfect key for the mental rest we so desperately need in the hotter months.

8 tricks that will help you read better

However, at Balance Phone we know that this is not as easy as sitting down and opening the pages.

There are many conditioning factors, such as laziness, time, or the choice of title, that can complicate it. Let's look at some tips to make it easier for you.

Find your reading spot

We all have places where we relax more or feel comfortable. Therefore, it is important that you identify yours, both spatially and temporally.

Some people read better at the pool or the beach, others even on train journeys. It is key that you choose one where, in general, you will not be disturbed.

Paper is better than digital

We recommend that you avoid at all costs using tablets or mobile devices to read, since we will be tempted to check other applications with just the swipe of a finger.

Furthermore, the light they emit is not at all beneficial for relaxing. We don't recommend ebooks either, since, in essence, we are manipulating technology and that is what we want to avoid during these months.

Nothing beats treating ourselves to that detox moment and enjoying something as valuable as paper books.

Choose topics that interest you

Before summer begins, we recommend that you make a list of the books you would like to read so as not to leave it to improvisation.

A good first step to maintain that routine over the following months is to look for books that motivate you and that are not an obligation, but a pleasure that you seek in your day-to-day life.

Visit public libraries

Budget shouldn't be an excuse. If you don't have the budget or don't have space at home for more books, public libraries are great for these cases.

In addition, from June to October, many towns offer these services in swimming pools, beaches, or squares.

You don't have to finish it if you don't like it

Remember that reading is an activity we do voluntarily and for enjoyment. It's not about finishing every book we start no matter what, but about having a good time and relaxing.

So, if a reading doesn't hook you, put it aside and start another one. If it's not sustainable, you will end up not reading.

Prioritize light books

In summer our body and mind slow down; plus, we have events, trips, and certain interruptions that can make it so we don't find time to read every day.

That's why we recommend that you opt for short books and light topics, which you can take from one place to another and that serve as a disconnection, without excessive emotional baggage.

Find a mirror reader

If you still need extra motivation, try to read the same book as someone close to you. It can be a friend, your partner, or a co-worker.

No formal commitment is needed: meeting one afternoon to discuss what you thought is more than enough.

Knowing that there is someone on the other side who is also reading that book is a small but very effective push. And if you don't agree on everything, even better.

Use phones with no distractions

And our last tip is to invest in phones like ours, which are designed to reduce the time we spend on screens. A perfect way to take advantage of the latest technological innovations without becoming a slave to them.

In fact, the National College of Opticians points out that if we read regularly on a traditional phone, we have a 90% chance of having vision problems, in addition to our level of cognitive patience decreasing, according to studies like those by linguist Maryanne Wolf.

Therefore, opting for phones like ours will allow you to send WhatsApps, listen to your favorite music, and call your loved ones, but putting aside the constant notifications, social networks, and the content that makes you live more on the internet than in the real world.

If you want to know more about this type of device, you just have to take a look at our website and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Balance Phone.

We will be happy to help you!

From working at Amazon to realizing something in my life didn’t quite fit: I spent my days doing a thousand things… but very few made me feel truly alive.

I stand for something simple – and incredibly valuable –: being present again.
I believe in real connections, unhurried conversations, and the kind of moments that only happen when we put our phones down and look life in the eye again.
